  1. Gleason-Type Derivations of the Quantum Probability Rule for Generalized Measurements.Carlton M. Caves, Christopher A. Fuchs, Kiran K. Manne & Joseph M. Renes - 2004 - Foundations of Physics 34 (2):193-209.
We prove a Gleason-type theorem for the quantum probability rule using frame functions defined on positive-operator-valued measures, as opposed to the restricted class of orthogonal projection-valued measures used in the original theorem. The advantage of this method is that it works for two-dimensional quantum systems and even for vector spaces over rational fields—settings where the standard theorem fails. Furthermore, unlike the method necessary for proving the original result, the present one is rather elementary. In the case of a qubit, we (...)

    Turning a Drug Target into a Drug Candidate: A New Paradigm for Neurological Drug Discovery?Steven D. Buckingham, Harry-Jack Mann, Olivia K. Hearnden & David B. Sattelle - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (9):2000011.
The conventional paradigm for developing new treatments for disease mainly involves either the discovery of new drug targets, or finding new, improved drugs for old targets. However, an ion channel found only in invertebrates offers the potential of a completely new paradigm in which an established drug target can be re‐engineered to serve as a new candidate therapeutic agent. The L‐glutamate‐gated chloride channels (GluCls) of invertebrates are absent from vertebrate genomes, offering the opportunity to introduce this exogenous, inhibitory, L‐glutamate receptor (...)

Surviving School Stress: Strategies for Well-Being in Today’s Complex World.Marcel Lebrun & Eric Mann - 2016 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
Surviving School Stress provides the reader with fundamental components of different types of stress, stressors, and strategies for interventions. In Part I, Dr. Lebrun breaks down the individual components of each type of stress and provides readers with a clear understanding of the key concepts and essential questions needed to be able to effectively intervene with children and adolescents within a school or home setting. Part II of the book provides a framework for educators to use to guide small and (...)

Reducing discrepancies between actual and ideal affect across adulthood: the roles of activity flow conduciveness, pleasantness, and familiarity. Da Jiang, Dwight C. K. Tse, Xianmin Gong, Vivian H. L. Tsang, Helene H. Fung, Ajit S. Mann, Jeanne Nakamura & Jeanne L. Tsai - 2024 - Cognition and Emotion 38 (8):1303-1317.
Previous findings demonstrate that people often do not feel how they want to feel, supporting the distinction between “actual affect” and “ideal affect.” But are there certain activities that reduce the discrepancy between actual and ideal affect? Based on flow theory and socioemotional selectivity theory, we examined whether the discrepancy between people’s actual and ideal positive affect would be smaller during activities that were more conducive to flow (a state of intense absorption and concentration), pleasant, and familiar. In Study 1, (...)

Interpretable groups in Mann pairs.Haydar Göral - 2018 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 57 (3-4):203-237.
In this paper, we study an algebraically closed field \ expanded by two unary predicates denoting an algebraically closed proper subfield k and a multiplicative subgroup \. This will be a proper expansion of algebraically closed field with a group satisfying the Mann property, and also pairs of algebraically closed fields. We first characterize the independence in the triple \\). This enables us to characterize the interpretable groups when \ is divisible. Every interpretable group H in \\) is, up to (...)

In a recent publication in this journal, Asle Kiran and Peter-Paul Verbeek (hereafter K&V) argue that extension theory and the notion of trust it implies are flawed. In this commentary, I defend extension theory against their critique. I first briefly introduce extension theory, then reconstruct K&V’s five arguments against extension theory and demonstrate that four of their five arguments are misplaced.

Hegel and the history of philosophy: proceedings of the 1972 Hegel Society of America Conference.Joseph J. O'Malley, K. W. Algozin & Frederick Gustav Weiss (eds.) - 1974 - The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff.
The papers published here were given at the second biennial conference of the Hegel Society of America, held at the University of Notre Dame, November 9-11, 1972. They appear in an order which reflects roughly two headings: (1) Hegel's conception of the history of philosophy in general, and (2) his relation to individual thinkers both before and after him. Given the importance of the history of philosophy for Hegel, and the far-reaching impact of his thought upon subsequent philosophy, it becomes (...)

A cross-sectional study to ascertain what the Singapore population would regard as material risk in the anaesthesia consent-taking process and identify demographic factors that predict patient preferences in medical decision-making to tailor a more patient-centered informed consent. A survey was performed involving patients 21 years old and above who attended the pre-operative evaluation clinic over a 1-month period in Singapore General Hospital. Questionnaires were administered to assess patients’ perception of material risks, by trained interviewers. Patients’ demographics were obtained. Mann–Whitney U (...)

Speech is a major vehicle for enacting and enforcing misogyny, so can counter-speech stop the harms of misogynist speech? This paper starts with a discussion of the nature of misogyny, from Dworkin, MacKinnon, and Frye, up to K. Manne’s new work, here emphasizing the ways that women are attacked or undermined through speech and images. Misogyny becomes toxic when it sharply and steadily limits the life prospects, including daily functioning, of the women it targets. To address the questions of (...)

Tame Expansions of $\omega$ -Stable Theories and Definable Groups.Haydar Göral - 2019 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 60 (2):161-194.
We study groups definable in tame expansions of ω-stable theories. Assuming several tameness conditions, we obtain structural theorems for groups definable and interpretable in these expansions. As our main example, by characterizing independence in the pair, where K is an algebraically closed field and G is a multiplicative subgroup of K× with the Mann property, we show that the pair satisfies the assumptions. In particular, this provides a characterization of definable and interpretable groups in in terms of algebraic groups in (...)

Bu çalışma, dinî boyutun dâhil edildiği psikolojik danışma sürecinin üniversite öğrencilerinin psikopatolojik düzeylerini gidermede etkili olup olmadığının sınanması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırma, Mardin Artuklu Üniversitesine bağlı farklı birimlerde lisans düzeyinde öğrenim gören on beş öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu öğrencilerden yedisine bireysel psikolojik danışma; sekizine ise dinî boyutun dâhil edildiği bireysel psikolojik danışma uygulanmıştır. Deneklerin seçilmesinde ve uygulamanın etkililiğini ölçmede Kısa Semptom Envanteri (KSE) kullanılmıştır. This Special Issue comes at a time when African countries and the Global South in general are facing unprecedented crises in securing energy to power their economies. The crises are necessitated largely by the developed Western countries exerting enormous power and pressure upon the developing world to move away from fossil fuels, while at the same time the West is increasing its uptake on fossils. However, with critical self-reflection we are able to understand that a crisis of this nature is (...)

Internalists about reasons following Bernard Williams claim that an agent’s normative reasons for action are constrained in some interesting way by her desires or motivations. In this paper, I offer a new argument for such a position—although one that resonates, I believe, with certain key elements of Williams’ original view. I initially draw on P.F. Strawson’s famous distinction between the interpersonal and the objective stances that we can take to other people, from the second-person point of view. I suggest that (...)
